Meeting 6th January 2015
I don't know about anyone else but I was really pleased to get back to Toastmasters after what seemed like a very long break.
It was another good turnout, fourteen of us, which is getting to be a consistent number at meetings.
We had two returning guests who both committed to becoming full members on the night and so our membership is looking very healthy. It is always good to get new blood in the club as one of the aims of Toastmasters is to learn from each other.
The evening started out with Ian giving us a toast to the New Year.
There were only two scheduled speeches for this week and, unfortunately, one of those had to make their apologies but luckily two other members bravely volunteered to give speeches to fill the agenda.
The first speech was an Icebreaker by one of our newest members, Alison, and judging by the content and delivery of her first ever speech we can look forward to her becoming an accomplished speaker in the future.
The second speech, by Andy, was totally unprepared. This is a different skill set to the prepared speeches and requires quick thinking. Andy delivered a well structured and intersting speech with a good beginning, middle and end and also a message to take away.
Linda gave the third, partially prepared, speech. Linda is working from an advanced manual, Interpretative Reading, and had to deliver an excerpt from a play. This is a challenging manual but Linda is a well practiced speaker and we can all learn a lot from her experienced deliveries.
Asma was our grammarian and chose "Eviscerate" as her word of the day. This should have been quite challenging to fit into the evening but Peter decided to base his Table Topics on it and threatened to eviscerate something from each of the Table Topics speakers ranging from tattoos, through television, to favourite foods. This was a very funny session and Marc managed to use the word of the day about ten times in his short speech.
There was a committee meeting on the 13th and, amongst other things, we discussed the upcoming District Conference in Nottingham This is a great opportunity to attend a conference as it is unusual for it to be close to us in the Heart of England. A group of us are attending and the more who go the better we will be represented.
If you are at all interested in going for half a day, a whole day or even the whole weekend (I am!) then visit their site at http://www.robinhoodconference.co.uk/ or just email on of the committee for more information.
