Meeting 21st April 2015
Full meetings are getting to be a habit here at Heart of England Speakers and this week we had to fetch more chairs as sixteen out of twenty current members turned up and we had the added pleasure of three guests. All of these had speaking experience in the past and two were previous Toastmasters so we are hopeful of boosting our membership in the next few weeks :)
There were four speeches and the evening began with a very informative Educational.
An Educational is a fifteen minute speech that give necessary information about the ins and outs of Toastmasters. It can be used as part of the Advanced Leadership Bronze (ALB) award or can just be delivered if a member feels there is a need.
Tanya delivered a competent and professional Educational outlining the Roles and Responsibilities of the different Committee members. This was especially useful as the appointment of new members, or the continuing of existing ones, takes place in June each year.
Tanya gave clear explanations of each Role so that anyone who is interested in standing knows what is expected. The Educational also helped the other members to understand who does what and who to chat to if they need to know something. The speech was supported by a PowerPoint presentation even though Tanya hardly had to look at the screen.
Alison gave the next speech and, even though it is only the second speech she has delivered, it was well paced, fluent and confident. It was a thought provoking argument for and against Assisted Suicide which was very well balanced but did not slip into sentimentality thereby remaining neutral and factual. Alison has a background of working with sufferers of Motor Neuron Disease and so her speech had a real authority and we could feel her knowledge.
Linda gave us an Oratorial speech from her Interpretive Reading Manual. She chose to deliver a speech by Frances Gage who was a fierce campaigner for Womens' Rights and this speech dealt particularly with the rights of the newly freed African American slave women.
Linda altered her hairstyle and donned some spectacles to evoke the age and atmosphere of the original setting and so managed to deliver this emotive subject with passion and integrity.
The final speech was by Sanat. Sanat never fails to impress us with his delivery and ideas so we were treated to another well staged and fun topic. We were each given a cake case with two tablets (licorice comfits!) one red, one green.
The red tablet meant nothing at all in your would change and the green tablet would change everything in your life. We were invited to choose one of the tablets after he suggested that no risk means no gains and to be highly successful you cannot be cautious.
There were three great evaluations. Tony, fresh from the Divisional finals, gave a very encouraging evaluation for Alison. Ian shows perception skills in, I think, only his second evaluation about Linda's speech. Finally our newest member Louisa, who has been Area Governor and Division Governor recently, gave an energetic and detailed evaluation of Sanat's speech.
Shaun was Table Topics master and this was another first but it was clear that he had prepared well. He asked members to imagine their life as a... with various objects like a chopping board, a door, a book amongst others.
Catalina evaluated Table Topics in her usual warm and engaging manner and identified the hand clasping "virus" that spread throught the club tonight.
Asma summed up the evening for us with her General Evaluation with some good points picked up.
Awards:
Best Table Topic - Mish
Best Evaluator - Ian
Best Speaker - Sanat
Another great night at Heart of England
