Meeting 20th August 2015
Heart Of England Speakers seems to be going through a purple patch at the moment with great attendance and a plethora of guests.
This is resulting in busy and very energetic meetings where we have had a large range of speech topics, abilities and experience. A wonderful learning environment.
Asma led the evening as Toastmaster of The Evening and did an excellent job. This is a challenging role and one she had not done before yet she carried it out like an old hand. Everything flowed well, was well controlled and was handled with her usual gently humorous and endearing style
We had four speeches this week and this is getting to be the norm. With the club in such a healthy position regarding member numbers it is important that members get a chance to do speeches and progress through their manuals. This is not only good for the individual but also for the club as we get rewarded for achieving certain goals throughout the year. I will include an update on these goals further down.
Dominic delivered his first speech, the Ice Breaker, and we were introduced to his own brand of dry humour as well as a very relaxed presentation manner and this led to a very entertaining speech about his numerical approach to life. I look forward to hearing Dominic speak again soon.
Charles' speech was his third where he aimed to get to the point. We were given a concise and informative outline of the important things that must be considered and included when building a website and I found this particularly interesting as I am updating my own. Charles was very comfortable with the subject matter so his speech flowed very well and came across with authority.
Ian invited us to Put Our Mask On First. Ian has a knack of producing speeches with a very clear central message and an energetic delivery style and this speech did not disappoint as he emphasised the importance of not being able to take good care of others if you have not made sure you looked after yourself first.
Our final speaker was Peter who is on one of the Advanced Manuals, Storytelling, and gave us a moving story of a young girl overcoming a catastrophic physical hurdle. Peter is brilliant at addressing life truths. He uses story, repetition and rhythm to drive the point over very strongly. Tonight's point was "What lies on the other side of adversity?"... his conclusion was "Transformation"
One of our newest members, Gabriel, was General Evaluator. English is his second language but, nevertheless, he gave a fluent and extremely comprehensive evaluation of everything that had not already been evaluated and included some really helpful recommendations. Recommendations are so important as they are the little improvements that each of us can work on. Without improvements we cannot progress and so Evaluation and Recommendation are the life blood of Toastmasters.
A little about the DCP which his is the Toastmaster Distinguished Club Programme.
Every year there are ten possibly goals that a club can achieve and Heart of England have consistently got 7 or more for a good few years.
As usual we are aiming for all ten and this would give us the "President Distinguished Club" ribbon to put onto the club banner.
As you can see from the table below we already have achieved 2 goals and need memebers to help us achieve all ten :)
