Club Contest night 15th September 2015

Tonight was the Heart of England Club Contest for Humorous Speech and Table Topics.
We combined it with an Open evening and it was a great success.
We laid the chairs out in theatre style, five rows of six, and this gave a more formal atmosphere and also allowed us more space for guests.

Mish was Contest Chair for the Humorous Speech contest and the difference from being Toastmaster is that you are not allowed to give any feedback on the speeches as they are being judged so everyone must be impartial.

There were four great speeches and the order was arranged beforehand by draw.

Sanat went first with an excellent speech called "Why, Why, Why" where he gave us a personal story seen from two completely different perspectives.  His usual use of gestures, facial expressions and storytelling skills kept us well amused.

Louisa followed with her speech "Small talk" where she gave us a really funny insight into the life of someone who is of less than average height.  Again great use of voices, movements and jokes kept us laughing all the way through.

Tony did not disappoint with his "On the 8th day" where he talked about Man's obsession with self betterment through ages going from sun worshipping to tree hugging and the hilarious pit falls of each including a condition called "closet tree hugger"

Charles, one of our newer members, had us laughing along with him as he recalled a recent trip to Argos that was so farcical that he felt as though it were a wind up and he was being secretly filmed by a TV crew.

Asma Chaired the Table Topics contest in the second half.  The contestants left the room and came in one by one so they could not hear the question early and as they came in Asma asked each one in turn to tell us about a really difficult lesson that they had to learn in life.

Tony told us that one of the hardest achievements he had found was making and giving speeches.  Toastmasters had helped him and he felt he was beginning to get there but was still always striving to improve.

Dave said that he had learnt that things aren't always easy and you often have to try, try again and still keep on trying.

Louisa had learnt that you can't always get what you want in life and some of your wishes are just not achievable.  She shared her secret desire to be a pilot and then finding out it was impossible when she failed the eyesight test.

Sanat gave us another of his great family anecdotes about a time when someone said his daughter was a failure and how they went on to prove this person completely wrong.

At the end of a packed evening Peter presented announced the winners and explained that they would go on to represent our club at the Area Contest in Birmingham Centre on October 3rd.
