Division Speech Contest 26th October 2014
On Sunday Sanat, one of our club members, took part in the Division Humorous Speech Contest in Harrogate.
With fierce competition he managed to come third so many congratulations to Sanat :)
Six members of the Heart of England club drove up to Harrogate and so we were really well represented. It was the first time most of us had met other clubs at Division level and it was an eye opener.
Division E covers all of the clubs from Newcastle Upon Tyne down to Leamington Spa so it is a big area. These inter Area/Division/District Contests are a crucial part of taking Speaking to the next level and seeing the wealth of talent and experience out there so I urge you all to try and go along to a contest. Toastmasters is fulfilling at Club level but we are part of a much larger organisation and it is good to remind ourselves of this.
What was noticeable about the Division Level meeting was the differences in culture.
We Midlanders were quite reserved and enjoyed the day in our usual laid back way, The North Westerners were a very lively bunch and their day was marked by lots of enthusiastic cheering, whooping and clapping (great fun) and we got to meet the "Yorkshire Mafia"!
There is a unique camaraderie between the many Yorkshire clubs which seems to have grown up because they are all quite young clubs which were mentored during their set-up by a core of very experienced Toastmasters. They therefore know each other very well so there was a lot of light hearted bantering. The Yorkshire people are famed for their wit and speaking and so I think Toastmasters is easily adopted by them which might explain the good number of clubs in a smallish geographic area.
It was clear the rewards that were gained on both sides by new clubs being supported through the initial set up process and we could all learn a lot from this example.
There are places in the country that are not well represented by Toastmasters at all and it would be great if other member could spread the word, encourage new guests or even help to set up new clubs.

The next local Contest will be the Area Contest for International Speech and Evaluation which covers 7 clubs around the Birmingham Warwickshire area and as far as Telford. The Area levels are held in March and I will let you all know dates. If you don't wish to take part please consider coming along to support and meet other Midland Toastmasters.
