Club Contest 3rd March 2015

This week was the First of the two Club Contests that are held each year in Toastmasters.

There were two categories and here is a bit of background ...
International Speech - The speech can be about anything but the contestant must have completed Project 6 in their Competent Communicator Manual.
Evaluation - A volunteer gives a target speech which is evaluated by each contestant but they are taken out of the room so they don't hear other evaluations before their own.

Linda was Contest Chair for the International Speech section and kept the first half of the evening flowing along in her own inimitable way.  There were two scheduled speakers, Tony and Tanya, but Peter volunteered to present a speech to make up the numbers.

Tanya was drawn to go first and gave us a scientific but entertaining speech about Microchimerism (look it up) called "Who am I?".  Although she used a PowerPoint presentation she only glanced at it a few times managing to deliver the speech with great knowledge and fluency.

Tony' speech was called "The best advice I ever gave myself".  Tony has delivered a collection of inspirational Life Coaching speeches and has been successful at being invited to deliver a workshop at the upcoming Robin Hood District Conference in May so many congratulations to him for that.

Peter gave the winning speech, "Gratitude Expressed" where he impressed upon us the importance of not only being grateful but of making sure we expressed that gratitude and how that had a big effect on people.
Peter is a practiced speaker and gave a well paced, energetic and fascinating speech with his usual addition of anecdotes to enforce his message.
Peter will go on to represent the club at the Area contest.

The "anonymous" judges were Alison, James and Ian.  All three are new members who have not seen a contest before and Linda took time to explain what would happen over the contest.

The second half of the evening was the Evaluation Contest and was chaired by Peter.

Sanat gave us a great Target Speech about "Charisma".  This is a speech I had heard a while ago before but was happy to hear again.  He included some great stories to illustrate his view of what he thought Charisma could be.

Sanat's speech was evaluated three times by Tanya, Tony and Mish who all had a different view and saw different points offering different recommendations.  Tony's evaluation was judged to be the best and so he is through to the Area level contest along with Peter. Our judges for the second half were Asma, Ian and Charles so thank you to them.

We have been asked to host the Area Contest and it will be held on March 28th at the Greswolde Hotel but in the larger room at the back.
The contest starts at 1pm and there will be lunch served at 12 This is a great chance to mingle and meet members from other clubs.
If you have not yet been to an inter club event please do your best to come along.  There will be roles that need to be filled but we also need an audience so it is a good opportunity to bring along family or friends so that can see what you get up to every second Tuesday.
We have to pay for the room and the food so if you are able to come can you let one of the committee know so that we can get the numbers.  There is an entrance fee of £12 to include lunch.  If you are not able to come to the lunch then there will be a £5 entrance fee to help cover costs.

I have been to many contests at different levels and I can highly recommend them as an enjoyable afternoon with a  good opportunity to share ideas.
