Meeting 17th March 2015

We had anther well attended meeting this week which meant we were able to have four speeches.
We are regularly getting busy meetings at the moment which makes for a more vibrant meeting and is also good for the club as it helps to maintain the membership.

We had hardly any changes to the Agenda because a lot of members had been onto the D71 website and either booked themselves in for a role or were asked by Peter and had accepted.  It makes things a lot easier if the agenda is as full as possible before the meetings so if you want to give a speech or fulfil a role make sure you get in quick!

There was a natural progression in the first three speeches.
Ian was first with his second speech in which he dared us to dream. An excellent and well structured speech which was delivered with confidence and a very engaging style.

James came next with his third speech that took us through a dream that he had had and managed to achieve.  Personally I thought James was MAD to undertake a sailing trip around the Isle of Mull with a not very experienced crew and a tiny boat but it was a humorous and entertaining speech that took us all along on the journey with him.

Mish then delivered her ninth speech in which she suggested that instead of making a bucket list we should turn the bucket over to make a podium and have a podium list of smaller, more attainable, goals.

The final speech was from Ernie.  Ernie is a visitor from another club and asked if he could give his speech at our club.  He delivered a very personal and emotional speech in which he talked about his three daughters at various stages of their lives and finished off by telling us what quality he felt he had learned from each of them.

Peter had set up a video camera and asked who wanted to have their speech recorded.  I surprised myself by saying Yes and a link was emailed to me a few days later.
I found this extremely useful and wish I had done it a lot earlier as there were gestures and stances that I saw myself doing that I would like to get rid of.
So I would suggest that all members consider being videoed if Peter is kind enough to bring the camera along again.  It will be posted on Google Drive but you will be the only one with the link so it will not be public.

There were four extremely good evaluations from Sanat, Linda, David and Glen.  All of them comprehensive pointing out the things in the speeches which made them work whilst all included recommendations to work on.

Table Topics were chaired by Ian and he asked some interesting questions about discoveries.  Ian introduced the topic well and kept the flow well in between with some humorous or pertinent comments after each one.
Linda was asked what was the most amazing invention of all time but couldn't quite make up her mind as she considered a few alternatives.
Asma wanted to thank the inventor of shoes for his contribution to her life.
Glen suggested a magic wand where he could go to any place at any time and so he could spend his lunch break from work on Bondi Beach.
Dave was asked what invention he felt would be essential to be able to endure life on Mars and he greedily wanted to take everything!
Ernie talked about past lost inventions and told us some of his memories of stories from Atlantis
Sanat was asked about living to be 500 years old and recounted another of his family memories.  This one was a touching story about an aged uncle who talked about having had a great life but not wanting to go on forever because "The journey is made by the stops on the way"

For the General Evaluation it was decided that we would do it as a group.  We do occasional group evaluations especially if there are a number of new members or guests.  It is useful in showing the difference approaches to evaluation and how important it is to have recommendations as well as commendations.

Awards:
Best Table Topic      Sanat
Best Evaluator          Glen
Best Speaker             Ian

We were lucky to have two guests tonight and hopefully we will see them again.  The club is thriving at the moment because we have had a number of new members all of which started off as guest so don't be reluctant to drag family or friends along.
A good opportunity is going to be the Area Contest this Saturday, March 28th, hosted by |Heart of England at the Greswolde Hotel, Knowle from 12 pm.
